In the constant search for innovation and implementation of new technologies in its operations, environmental, social and governance issues arise as strategic pillars to CSN’s performance.
NoOur efforts are directed to the increase of productivity and efficiency, following the best practices and investing the necessary to enhance the sustainable growth of the organization.
“Fazer bem, fazer mais, fazer para sempre” – our essence is directly related to our ESG agenda and even more to the way we see our role and responsibilities in the communities we are present.
For us at CSN, people, their safety and integrity are the greatest value among all our goals and priorities. No emergency, financial goal or operational performance can compromise our employees ‘health and safety. Our health and well-being initiatives include the PPAE (Alcohol and Substance Abuse Prevention program) that aims to identify employees who are addicted to substances, whether it is alcohol or legal or illegal drugs, and offers proper support and treatment. In 2018 and 2019, the program supported 56 employees and rehabilitated 68% of participants. The remaining 32% continue to be supported by the program.
Our focus is to increase the diversity of CSN Group. In that sense, one of highlights took place at UPV (President Vargas Steelworks) Through the Diversity Program. In 2018 and 2019, we worked on the women's technical training to raise employees 'awareness and foster inclusion at CSN through guided opportunities. Therefore, we recorded a 45% increase in the number of women at UPV, compared to 2018, closing 2019 with 1,264 female employees in this unit.
At the President Vargas Steelworks, we are the country's only steelworks to have come up with its water footprint, compiling a water inventory, as per ISO 14046. Due to its pioneering feature and complexity, the project was a presentation topic at the Water Management Workshop organized by WSA (World Steel Association). UPV had a 92.9% water reuse rate in its production process, while CSN Mineração the average reclaimed water ratio was at 72.2% in 2019. The perspective is that our assessments include the mapping of hydro risks for steelmaking and mining operations according to international standards. In all units, we have effluent control systems and monitoring stations in watercourses located in the influence areas of our businesses.
Supported by CSN Inova, we intensified the search for solutions based on renewable energy generation. In 2019, 75% of all energy we used was generated by CSN Group, whose self-produced energy is fully renewable. We invest in power generation projects in order to maintain our self-produced energy.
For occupational health and safety issues, 100% of CSN's own employees and third parties are covered by formal committees aligned with strategic guidelines, who hold periodic meetings and group discussions on our guidelines and metrics.
The purpose of CSN Inova, the Company's innovation branch, is to work on the development of new technologies and to allow us to integrate solutions and trends, in addition to entering into partnerships with start-ups and institutions, aiming to optimized costs, include industry 4.0 concepts and, therefore, to place the company in the spotlight and forefront of our industry.
Among the main steelmaking process generated co-products are blast furnace slags, used in the production of cement and byproducts from carbochemical process that are traded by the Special Sales department. We created a new values for our co-products, contributing to cash generation and in line with the circular economy concept, given that we avoid the use of new natural resources and significantly reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills. At the UPV, we recycle, reuse, transform or sell 97.4% of waste (hazardous and non-hazardous) as co-products, avoiding sending it to landfills and contributing to a more sustainable management.
We are part of entities that seek to produce solutions, discuss on strategies and implementation plans for natural resources management. In addition, we work to raise our employees 'awareness and encourage new technologies development that aim to improve operational efficiency and reduce the carbon footprint, promoting environmental offsetting and taking stock of greenhouse gas emission in accordance with the GHG Protocol guidelines since 2010, having received the Gold Seal over the past 5 years (2014-2019). According to a sector survey based on documents made available by the World Steel Association, we have one of the smallest scope 2 emissions in the industry, given that CSN's power consumption comes from self-sustained renewable sources. The reduction in scope 2 emissions was possible because 75%of power consumption comes from renewable sources.
We have protected areas that cover over 68,000 hectares in different Brazilian states, and we develop preservation and conservation initiatives of Brazilian biome, which includes the Atlantic Forest and the Cerrado, the maintenance of such areas has as outcome 11 million in carbon inventory and we reported the removal of 35,384 tons of biogenic CO2 every year due to the planting of native seedlings in our influence areas. Among the initiatives over this 2-year period, the planting of 8,000 seeding in the urban environment of Volta Redonda (RJ) features as a highlight.
Our purpose is to foster transparency in terms of governance, policies, procedures, practices and performance of interested parties. We have control mechanisms such as the Compliance and Integrity Program to train, assess and regulate the activities developed by all employees and third-party service providers based on laws, policies and internal rules.
