Dam Management

We comply with guidelines and recommendations on dam operation and safety as per ICOLD (International Commission on Large Dams), a non-governmental international commission that fosters the exchange of information on the planning, designing, building and operation of large dams. The standards and practices comply with ICMM (International Council on Mining and Metals) requirements.

By 2021, we will implement waste treatment technologies with a focus on de-characterizing tailings dams; we are already pioneers in the process of filtering iron ore tailings in large volume, with 100% of the tailings filtered and dry stacked in 2020.

In 2020 100% of the iron ore tailings are filtered and dry stacked at CSN Mineração.

The dams built by the upstream method are undergoing a process of de-characterization and decommissioning. The safety and monitoring of the structures is done by engineers and technicians in dam geotechnics. We are investing in the gradual independence of the dams and focusing on the safety and sustainability of the business, with the best interface with the surrounding community, bringing operational balance to everyone. In this sense, the main projects are:

Tailings Filtration Plant I and II

Magnetic Concentration Plant that reduces the volume of tailings, CMAI and CMAI II:
