CSN’s operations, especially in steelmaking, mining, and cement, generate emissions of particulate matter, NOx, and SOx, which are monitored and controlled by the company’s Environmental Management System to minimize environmental impacts and comply with licensing body regulations. In steelmaking, CSN is investing R$ 750 million in modernizing the filters and precipitators of its sintering plants, with completion expected by 2026, resulting in a 23% reduction in particulate matter emissions per ton of steel. The Usina Presidente Vargas conducts real-time monitoring of emissions and air quality, using nine stations in Volta Redonda (RJ).

Monitoring Networks
To prevent the dispersion of dust, the UPV uses polymers on stockpiles and mist cannons that reduce suspended particles. In mining, CSN uses water spraying, water trucks, tire washers, and techniques like hydroseeding to control dust, suspending operations in adverse weather conditions.
In the cement segment, the modernization of filtering systems has reduced particulate matter emissions by 19%, and the increased use of alternative fuels has decreased fossil fuel dependency and NOx emissions. Continuous control and advanced technologies at the plants ensure greater efficiency and less environmental impact.
