September 8, 2021
The CSN has just published its Integrated Report for the year 2020. In the material, the results of the Group’s five businesses can be found – steel, mining, cement, logistics and energy. CSN’s evolution in several indices focused on ESG issues stands out. Among the indicators, one of the most expressive was the reduction in the intensity of greenhouse gas emissions (scopes 1 and 2) by 8% per ton of steel produced at the Presidente Vargas Plant (UPV), in Volta Redonda.
The data is close to the 10% target foreseen only for 2030. In addition to the reduction in emissions, another positive point reported in the Integrated Report covers the 8.3% decrease in the total volume of water withdrawn, in 2020, in all areas of activity of the CSN Group, compared to 2019.
Presidente Vargas Plant (UPV), in Volta Redonda, the reduction in water volume has reached 70% in the last 20 years. The advances are also great with regard to operational safety, in which the company achieved, in 2020, an 18.3% reduction in accidents compared to 2019.
This is the best rate in the last seven years. “I see CSN at its best in every aspect. We have a much more modern company, with an agenda that is based on innovation, on good environmental practices, on the best way to treat its employees, its workforce.
All of this leads us to a longevity that is expected for a company of this size, with the assets we have. And all this reflects internally”, explains Helena Brennand Guerra, Director of Sustainability, Environment, Occupational Health and Safety at CSN. Click here to access the Integrated Report 2020.
