Air quality

Our main sources of atmospheric emissions for the Steel, Mining and Cement sector are mainly particulate matter (PM), sulfur oxides (SOx) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). In this way, the Company promotes the management of atmospheric emissions, which can be mobile or fixed, so we have strict controls and monitoring of these emissions. We also maintain air quality monitoring stations around our operating units, mainly in Volta Redonda – RJ, where the Presidente Vargas Plant is located.

We present data on emissions from the operations of UPV, Siderurgia e Cimentos, and CSN Arcos – Cimentos and CSN Mineração, since the emissions recorded at these plants are the most representative. In addition, part of our other units do not have fixed sources of emissions. We set a goal to reduce particulate matter emissions per ton of crude steel produced at the UPV by 40% by 2030, compared to 2019. In this report, the emissions data presented refer to the operations of UPV, Siderurgia e Cimentos, and CSN Arcos – Cimentos, since the emissions recorded in these plants are the most representative. In addition, part of our other units do not have fixed sources of emissions.

Monitoring Networks

In Volta Redonda, we maintain three automatic air quality monitoring stations and five semi-automatic ones, in addition to weather stations, in order to provide transparency to our environmental controls and air quality indicators in the municipality of Volta Redonda (RJ). The monitoring of atmospheric emissions from the UPV and the cement plants in Volta Redonda (RJ) and Arcos (MG) is carried out through isokinetic measurements (gas flow at the equipment inlet has the same velocity as the gas flow to be analyzed ) and continuous, through automatic meters of particulate materials and gases. We constantly monitor our atmospheric emissions, in order to guarantee the maintenance of air quality within the norms established by law, without generating risks to the health of the population. In Volta Redonda, we monitor both atmospheric emissions and air quality, controlling and reporting the results in a transparent, automated and real-time manner to the state environmental agency, which consolidates the information and publishes the IQAr (Air Quality Index) for the population.
