• Congonhas intensifies efforts to preserve springs

    May 19, 2024

The city of Congonhas, in Minas Gerais, took an important step in preserving its water resources by launching the Every Drop Counts Program. Created by Municipal Law No. 4,081/2022, the project was developed in partnership with CSN Mineração and aims to protect and restore local springs. The initiative guarantees water for communities, both in terms of quality and quantity.

Among the actions carried out are the recovery of riparian forest areas through the planting of native seedlings and the fencing of springs, fundamental measures to prevent silting and preserve watersheds. The project was implemented in the Caetano and Pequeri streams, which help maintain the Maranhão river and, consequently, the Paraopeba river, which play an essential role in regional water supply. In total, 11 springs were restored throughout 2024, located on four rural properties.

For Sueila Cruz, Environmental Coordinator at CSN Mineração, the initiative goes beyond environmental recovery, also promoting community awareness:

“The implementation of the Every Drop Counts Program, through the recovery and fencing of springs in the municipality of Congonhas, guarantees the continuity of water in these springs for local communities. From the area selection phase to the project implementation phase, discussions are held with landowners to raise awareness of the importance of this work. This awareness-raising adds to their knowledge of good practices in caring for spring areas on their properties, also contributing to environmental education in the territory.”

With the support of the Secretariat for the Environment and Rural Development, the Every Drop Counts Program reinforces its commitment to sustainability and the responsible use of natural resources. The union between the public and private sectors demonstrates that strategic partnerships are essential for building a more balanced future and for the conservation of ecosystems.
