• CSN opens Steel Aggregate Yard for school and university visits

    April 30, 2026

Initiative reinforces commitment to environmental education, innovation and transparency

The Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN) has launched a guided visitation program at its Steel Aggregate Yard in Volta Redonda (RJ), expanding its engagement with society and strengthening its commitment to environmental education, transparency and sustainable practices.

The initiative enables students from schools and universities to gain first-hand insight into how the industry can transform by-products into value-added solutions, aligned with the principles of the circular economy. Among the first groups welcomed were students from public schools in the region, who were able to closely observe processes and technologies applied to the reuse of steel slag.

During the technical tour, visitors follow the stages of material processing, which is converted into steel aggregate with multiple applications. One of the highlights is the authorization granted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA) for the product to be used as a raw material in fertilizers and soil conditioners across Brazil — a solution that contributes to improving soil quality and increasing agricultural productivity.

Rich in calcium and magnesium, steel aggregate helps correct soil acidity and delivers performance comparable to traditional soil amendments, while meeting all legal safety requirements. In addition to agricultural use, the material has well-established applications in urban and highway paving, railway ballast and civil construction, as well as potential use in the production of more sustainable cement.

The initiative also underscores significant environmental gains. Studies indicate that materials derived from steel slag can contribute to atmospheric carbon capture, reinforcing the industry’s role in decarbonization efforts and in the efficient use of natural resources.

According to Daira Rodrigues, CSN’s Strategic Projects Manager, opening the site to the public plays a key role in promoting a more sustainable culture. “By sharing knowledge and transparently showcasing our solutions, we contribute to fostering more aware and engaged generations in addressing environmental challenges.”

The visitation program will continue over the coming months, with a focus on expanding access for educational institutions and strengthening dialogue with society.

    Research, Innovation and Collaboration

The visits also showcase research initiatives developed in partnership with Pesagro-Rio, which conducts field studies on the safe use of steel aggregate in agricultural crops. These trials assess the material’s performance in acidic soils, characteristic of Brazil’s Southeast region, contributing to its scientific validation and the expansion of its sustainable applications.
