• In four years, Transnordestina railway more than doubles the number of female employees

    June 20, 2024

The Transnordestina railway has more than doubled its female workforce in four years as a result of an unprecedented Diversity, Equity and Inclusion strategy. In 2020, there were 122 women in the company, and by the end of 2024, there were 303—including direct employees of the operational railroad (FTL) and the company responsible for building the new railroad line (TLSA).

There are many ways for women to access the railroad, especially in operational areas historically occupied by men. In addition to the targeted hiring of female professionals for various positions, there are internship and apprenticeship programs and the Capacitar program, aimed exclusively at women.

Today, women make up 20% of the railroad’s workforce. The goal for the entire CSN Group, of which FTL and TLSA are part, is to reach 28% women by the end of 2025.

In the operational area, some examples of women’s inclusion are in the roles of mechanic, electrician and even train driver. The first woman to work as a train driver after internal training began in November 2023 at the São Luis (MA) branch.

Some of the women have been trained within the company itself, in partnership with SENAI, through the exclusively female Young Apprentice program. In this program, which began in 2021, young women take in-company classes taught by SENAI instructors and also practical classes in workshops and maneuvering yards with highly experienced professionals who work at the company. Four editions have already been held for the positions of electrician, locomotive and wagon mechanic, railway operator, and logistics assistant.

The Capacitar program, which originated in another CSN Group unit, was incorporated by the railroad in 2024, with the aim of training women over 18 years of age who have completed high school and are interested in working in railway operations. The initiative has been an important channel for the qualification and hiring of women in positions such as traffic controller, station agent, and shunter, among others.

Approximately 70% of the young women from these programs have been hired.
