• INEA recertifies CSN laboratory for effluent analysis

    August 5, 2024

The Environmental Chemistry Laboratory of Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional, located at the Research Center in Volta Redonda, has been authorized by the State Environmental Institute (INEA) to analyze the effluents discharged into the Paraíba do Sul River by the CSN Presidente Vargas and Porto Real plants.

The reaccreditation process, which takes place every two years, is carried out through rigorous audits that assess the compliance of the Research Center’s laboratories, enabling the company to monitor and comply with environmental legislation applicable to effluent discharges in accordance with the environmental criteria established by the municipality, state, and federal government.

Approximately 10,000 laboratory analyses are performed annually by our employees, involving several teams responsible for activities such as collection, transportation of samples to the laboratory, preparation of samples, analysis of samples, and preparation of reports with the results of the analyses.

Water and effluent monitoring is an important step in UPV’s water management, enabling the reuse of effluents from its processes, for which CSN is a benchmark in the steel industry, with a recirculation rate of approximately 94% and low water consumption compared to other steel producers.
