World Water Day features clean streams and fish releases in ecological initiatives
March 29, 2024
The cleanup of the Bugio no Belmonte stream today, march 26, marked yet another initiative by CSN in collaboration with the Volta Redonda City Hall and other entities in celebration of World Water Day. This action involved the participation of the Grupo Recriar and the Rotary Club, with the aim of raising public awareness about the importance of environmental preservation and proper waste disposal. Dozens of volunteers participated in removing trash from the site.
On World Water Day, march 22, more than 5,000 fish were released into the Paraíba do Sul river by CSN, with the support of the City Hall and INEA (State Environmental Institute). The fish released are intended to repopulate the aquatic fauna of the Paraíba river and are native species threatened with extinction.
“These actions by CSN are very important and have been taking place for three years in celebration of World Water Day. They are positive for the community, especially in raising awareness among the population about the proper use and conservation of water resources,” says Marcelo Ricco, Environmental Analyst at CSN.
For the municipal government, these actions help raise awareness about the importance of nature conservation and promote the repopulation of endangered native species in the Paraíba river.
These and other initiatives promoted by CSN are part of the Environmental Education Program (PEA) in Volta Redonda. The PEA is run by the Fundação CSN, in partnership with the City Hall, through the departments of Education and Environment.
Ricardo Wagner, INEA manager, accompanied the release of the fish and highlighted its importance: “These fish, in particular, come from the genetic bank of the Paraíba do Sul river, managed by the Chico Mendes Institute, ICMBio, where all the genetic improvement of native and endangered species of the Paraíba do Sul river is carried out. Therefore, actions such as this contribute effectively to the genetic strengthening of native species. We once again congratulate the initiative, which has the support and prioritization of the Government of the state of Rio de Janeiro.”
